In New York City (NYC), Black people and other people of color are more likely to die or experience serious complications during pregnancy, during labor and childbirth, and after giving birth than White people. The New York City Standards for Respectful Care at Birth and this companion guide are part of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s efforts to eliminate these unacceptable racial and ethnic inequities in maternal health outcomes. The Health Department is committed to improving maternal health care for all pregnant people in NYC. For more information, visit nyc.gov/health and search for Sexual and Reproductive Justice or SRJ. The Health Department in collaboration with the Birth Justice Defenders and the Sexual and Reproductive Justice Community Engagement Group created this guide. Thank you to everyone who provided their input and time!
