(PUMP) for Nursing Mothers Act
Big news: the Providing Urgent Maternal Protections (PUMP) for Nursing Mothers Act has been introduced in the House with bipartisan support!
This important bill would expand the Break Time for Nursing Mothers law in two significant ways:
Ensure that an additional 9 million employees have the right to break time and a private space to pump breast milk. Ensure that breastfeeding employees have access to remedies that are available for other violations of the FLSA if an employer does not provide break time and a private space.
The PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act was introduced by longtime champion Representative Maloney (D-NY-12), Maternity Care Caucus Co-Chairs Representatives Herrera-Beutler (R-WA-3) and Roybal-Allard (D-CA-40), and Black Maternal Health Caucus Co-Chairs Representatives Underwood (D-IL-14) and Adams (D-NC-12).
Far too often, breastfeeding employees are forced to choose between breastfeeding and their paycheck. In fact, nearly one in four women of childbearing age are not covered by the current Break Time for Nursing Mothers law.
Without simple accommodations, breastfeeding after returning to work can become difficult or even impossible. It doesn't have to be. Republican and Democratic lawmakers agree that policy changes expanding protections for breastfeeding employees are needed.
It is time to raise our voices together to urge Congress to swiftly pass the PUMP Act through Committee and send it to the House floor for a vote: ask your legislators to cosponsor!
Together, we can make sure that every breastfeeding employee has the right to pump during their work day.
