According to NYS Commissioner of Health- Howard Zucker, MD, JD, New York remains in the bottom third of states for the number of women dying with Black women dying at a rate of 3.5 times more than white women.
The Bronx and Brooklyn had the highest Maternal mortality rates with:
The Bronx: 255.3 deaths per 10,000 deliveries – highest rates: CB 6, 9, 10, 11 & 12
Bklyn: 295.7 deaths per 10,000 deliveries- highest rates: North and Central Brooklyn
Nearly all Bronx community districts have severe Maternal morbidity (degradation of health that can worsen with time) rates higher than the NYC average:
The average Maternal Morbidity rate from 2014-2016 in NYC 270.2 as compared to:
Bronx areas in: Williamsbridge: 478.1; Throgs Neck: 422.8 ; and East Tremont: 422.1
The three-year average Mortality Rate from 2007-2015 in: NYS- Average: 20.9 Maternal deaths; NYC- Average: 22.9 Maternal deaths; as compared to the Bronx- Average: 36.2 Maternal deaths.
