The standards detail health protections for pregnant women during and after childbirth and will be distributed on posters and brochures to hospitals and other clinical settings, community-based organizations, and neighborhood health action centers citywide.
The initiative builds on the First Lady and Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services’ announcement in July to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in maternal mortality and to reduce the number of severe maternal morbidity events by half. In New York City, approximately 3,000 women die or experience a life-threatening event related to childbirth each year.
